How does the Commonwealth Medical Internship Program work?

By now, you are probably quite familiar with the CMI Program but if you still feel a little unsure, the process is detailed here:

  1. Application
    Final year medical students complete and submit an application to the department to be placed on the Commonwealth Medical Internships (CMI) eligible candidates list.
  2. Eligibility Check
    Department assesses eligibility of medical students.
  3. Decision
    Applicants that meet all eligibility criteria are placed onto the CMI eligible candidates list. The Approver (DOH representative) is notified of successful and unsuccessful applicant numbers.
  4. Notification
    The department notifies applicants of outcomes. This is likely to occur in September based on previous years.
  5. Release of Recruitment Information
    The department provides the list of CMI eligible candidates to successful private hospitals; notifies CMI eligible candidates that the list of eligible candidates has been sent to successful private hospitals; and notifies the dates for the recruitment period.
  6. Hospitals contact applicants
    At the beginning of the recruitment period, typically September to October, each hospital taking part in the CMI Program is able to contact the applicants.
  7. Interviews
    Interested applicants may be contacted for interview.
  8. Offer of Internships
    During the recruitment period hospitals make offers to eligible CMI candidates.  
  9. Accept Offer
    Eligible CMI candidate accepts offer.
  10. Notification
    Private hospital and candidate separately notify the department of acceptance of the offer.
  11. Deed of Agreement
    The department executes deed of agreements with eligible CMI candidates who accept a CMI place and notifies the private hospital of the signed agreement.   
  12. Employment Contract
    Private hospitals enter into employment contracts with eligible CMI candidates accepting CMI places, conditional on the CMI signing and returning the deed of agreement to the Commonwealth and Commonwealth funding being received.  

How do I apply for a position at Ramsay WA?

To apply for a Ramsay WA internship, send your CV including two references (preferably clinical), your full academic transcript and a cover letter to Mrs Kelly Owen at owenk@ramsayhealth.com.au. Your cover letter should be no greater than two pages and should address the following questions:

  1. Why you feel you should be considered for a Ramsay WA internship?
  2. Why you feel you work well in a team? (please give an example)
  3. Do you work well under pressure and are you able to prioritise your time? (please give examples)

Applications must be received by the deadline communicated.

All applications are reviewed and those shortlisted may receive a contract with or without interview.

How will the interviews be conducted?

You may be contacted for a face-to-face or phone/skype interview.

What does the interview process entail?

The interview will be a formal interview and will contain both clinical and non-clinical questions. They are not designed to catch you out, so it’s important to just answer honestly and to the best of your ability.

What happens after the interview?

After the interview, you may or may not be issued with an offer. All offers will be made up to the end of the recruitment period. If you have not heard from us after this time, unfortunately you have not been successful in your application for a position with Ramsay WA.

What happens after I am offered employment with Ramsay WA?

Once the offer is made, it is important for you to sign this and return it to us as soon as possible as there is always only a short amount of time between the offer and the beginning of Term 1. In this time, you will need to apply for registration with AHPRA, and you will also need to apply for a provider and a prescriber number from Medicare. All this takes a significant amount of time and the sooner these applications are placed the more chance you will be able to start on the first day of term which is 15 January 2018 (there will be an orientation week prior to this which all CMI interns must attend).

I will require a visa to work in Australia – will I be able to receive sponsorship if I am successful in my application?

Ramsay Health Care can sponsor you for a visa and once you accept the offer, the applications for the visa will be sent to you. Again, please get these signed and sent back as soon as possible so that they can be lodged (as they also take a long time to be processed by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection).
